Hey everyone! Summer is here and that means plenty of sunshine and outdoor fun! I can’t express to you enough that getting outside in the sun is not just good for you its VITAL to overall health, wellness, and longevity. Unfortunatly we have been mislead to believe that the second we hit the pool we must load up on sunscreen to prevent sunburn and long term sun damage. There is truth to this but its gone extreme to the point people are afraid of any sun exposure without having sunscreen on.
I am NOT suggesting you go outside all day and bake in the sun without sunscreen. That is NOT good for you. But getting outside everyday with your body exposed to the sun’s rays is NOT going to kill you or cause cancer.
Spend a good amount of time ( at least 30-45 min) in the sun and when you feel its time head to the shade. Basically you don’t NEED to slather yourself or your kids with sunscreen every time you walk out the door during the summer. The sun is GOOD for kids to (without sunscreen)! Plus many of those sunscreens are extremely TOXIC! (Here is a FULL LIST of the best sunscreens of 2018)
Exposing yourself to more sun could help you shed weight!
Vitamin D deficiency is associated with developing obesity and with health problems linked to obesity. Sun exposure is the BEST way to maintain adequate levels; ultraviolet rays trigger vitamin D synthesis on bare skin (without sunscreen). There is also a connection between vitamin D and metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increases the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Exposing as much of your body as possible to sunlight for 30-45 minutes elicits the biological production of vitamin D and neuropeptide known as Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (MSH). Together, these compounds prevent fat storage, control appetite and normalize insulin and blood glucose levels. Increased Thermogenesis is also a result!
Without exposure to sunlight, excess fat storage occurs. NOTE: If you live in cold climates, its best to supplement with cod liver oil daily.
Bottom line: GET PLENTY OF SUNSHINE EVERYDAY! ENJOY THE SUN!
Happy Summer!
Be Well!
